November 20th - 22nd, 2015
Artisans use manual and artistic skills to design items that may be functional or strictly decorative - pottery, quilts, stained glass, clothing, jewelry, toys, household utensils, tools, storage containers, rugs, floral arrangements, musical instruments. They are carvers, glass blowers, metal arts workers, potters, stained glass artists, instrument makers, weavers, and craft makers.
Master Artisans are identified persons who possess a very high degree of the knowledge and skills required for creating these items from the cultural traditions of groups, communities and individuals.
In 2015, Holiday Folk Fair International will focus on the artisans - encouraging them to continue to produce their crafts and, more importantly, to pass their skills and knowledge on to others, particularly within their own communities. Such intangible cultural heritage cannot be recovered once it has been lost. The Holiday Folk Fair International continues to preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage.
This year the Holiday Folk Fair International is highlighting the knowledge and skills involved in creating traditional objects that are as varied as the items themselves and range from delicate, detailed work such as weaving wheat straw or designing and sewing quilts to robust, rugged tasks like creating a sturdy basket or building a canoe and carving the paddles. Equally important is teaching the history of the art form and the customs associated with it. For 72 years, the Holiday Folk Fair International has been a keeper of our rich and diverse living heritage, safeguarding the past, honoring the present, and embracing the future.
